Genre/Influences: Cold-wave, EBM.

Format: Digital, Vinyl.

Background/Info: This self-titled album also is the first official release by Ton8. “Ton8” was released in 2019. Unfortunately there’s not much information available about this project.

Content: “Ton8” is an interesting mix between different 80s influences. It can be simply be described as the ultimate offspring between cold-wave and EBM. Some songs also have a touch of post-punk. The tracklist is diversified and yet it never really feels like you’re listening to different bands. The common element and cement between all songs is the cold sensation. Some of the EBM inspired cuts remind me of DAF. All the songs have been sung in German.

+ + + : Ton8 brings us an exciting sonic canvas from the 80s dark underground scene. I have a preference for the more EBM-driven cuts, which also have something pretty minimal like. But there’s also something to say about the cold-wave driven cuts carried by low bass lines and empowered by guitar sounds. The album features 11 songs and especially the final part is worthy of examination.

– – – : The album is maybe missing a hit although we get several cool songs instead;

Conclusion: Ton8 is one more interesting band to discover from the Young And Cold records roster. It will mainly appeal to 80s nostalgic lovers.

Best songs: “Kaufen”, “Wirklichkeit”, “Schönheit”, “Komm Schon”.

Rate: (7½).

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
