Action adventure games are ones which offer fans a chance to live out the fantasy of saving the world, or as a way to channel some extra energy.

The jump scares and thrill of facing monsters and mechs or commanding a company of soldiers to defend and defeat enemies is a rush in its own right, much like watching the reels of an online pokies game at a casino, wondering where the winning symbols will land.

For those wondering which games are worth purchasing, or what’s new on the scene, then look no further. These are the best online action games out so far this year, that you’ll definitely want to get your hands on as soon as possible.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Whether you’re a fan of lore, fantasy, or epic swordplay, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty meets all these needs and more. Created by Team Ninja, who are famed for Ninja Gaidan and Nioh, this new epic doesn’t disappoint. The action scenes are well thought out, with great attention to detail paid to overall form.

The game is set during China’s Three Kingdoms era and has a distinct Wuxia appeal. With a uniquely new stamina gauge combined with new jumping options, fans of Team Ninja will appreciate the additional mobility that this sword-clashing fantasy game brings. Enjoy the chance to vanquish the ancient evil threatening things, while taking the time to engage in swordplay with legendary Chinese mythological heroes and champions.

There’s little that could be improved upon in this game. Enjoy it on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox X, S, , Xbox Cloud Gaming, and PC.

Jedi Survivor

Whenever a new Star Wars game comes out, it very rarely disappoints, and Star Wars Jedi Survivor has been very well received. The new single-player first-person action and puzzle adventure game by Respawn Entertainment, published by EA, lets you continue to play as protagonist Cal Kestis. He once more needs to save the galaxy from the dark side and adventures around it with stunning visuals and backstory additions.

Explore brand new planets, revisit old haunts, engage in expanding your skills and abilities, and pick up new equipment. The grandiose adventure allows for new lightsaber fighting styles and force abilities which has added charm to an already impressive character repertoire.

These new additions provide players with all they need to create a completely unique character with different strengths and weaknesses. This comes in handy as you face old enemies, and some new ones. The game is playable on Xbox S and X and One. PC, as well as PlayStation 4 and 5.

Atlas Fallen

One of the best games so far this year is Atlas Fallen, a new offering by Deck12 Interactive, and published by Focus Entertainment.

Released 10 August 2023, the game offers backstory lore based on the memory of sand and the world’s remembrance that it was abandoned by the ancient gods. Throw in these disdaining deities and a world left in ruins, and you wind up with the protagonist who must face legendary and mythical monsters in numerous different arenas.

One of the best parts of the game is that most areas are reached by surfing around the glorious sandy scenes. The player can wield mighty attacks thanks to a magical glowing gauntlet that allows them to shapeshift it into a host of different weapons. After a while playing, you’ll be drawn into the game since the visuals are genuinely gorgeous. Enjoy Atlas Fallen on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and S.

Company of Heroes 3

Released in February 2023, Relic Entertainment rekindled the love of its CoH fans after nearly a decade of silence, with the addition of Company of Heroes 3. This game has two different campaigns, one of which is set in Italy, while the other takes place within North Africa, with the game occurring during World War II.

Fans of the original game will find the gameplay very familiar but note the additions of a Tactical Pause as well as a fully dynamic map on which to campaign. This allows the newer gameplay mechanics to add to the already solid controls that the games are known for.

There is a much wider range of units to command, and the ability to embark on additional objectives helps to keep the maps from feeling stagnant. All in all Company of Heroes 3 is a solid action game for those who like a strategy component. Available on PS5, Xbox S and X, as well as PC.

System Shock Remake

Any fan of the original 1990s System Shock game will absolutely love the remake created by Nightdive Studios and published by Prime Matter. Released in May 2023, the System Shock Remake has garnered fantastic reviews from old and new fans alike.

Set in space, aboard Citadel Station, the cyberpunk atmosphere of the game is a faithful recreation of the original. The revamped visuals and smooth gameplay have fans taking a trip down memory lane, with plenty of recordings within the station to help players figure things out. For those wondering, yes SHODAN is still a very present, very creepy factor that’s once more delighting and terrifying old and new players alike.

Playable on PlayStation 4 and 5, PC, Linux, MacOS, Xbox X and S and One.

With the number of incredible action games available, players are spoilt for choice when it comes to picking which ones to play first. Whichever you choose, you’ll embark upon a quest of epic proportions that will keep you entertained for hours.
