Genre/Influences: New-wave, cold-wave.

Content: Originally released during the early 80s “A Mysterious Design” was the single release of this Italian project. Infrastition brought this album back to life and on CD format. This is a very interesting dive into the most hidden and lost bands of the 80s, but Style Sindrome definitely is a project deserving this resurrection on CD format.

The debut songs remind me of Belgian bands like Allez Allez, Lavvi Ebbel and Luna Twist. There’s a similar mixture between new-wave and pop elements. The use of a saxophone and the typical coldness emerging of the compositions remain very nostalgic elements. It reminds me to a lot of bands from my teenage period and it would be pretty cool by the way to have some of the aforementioned bands on CD format as well.

After this cool debut Style Sindrome moves towards darker and specific new-wave fields. The band is mainly reminding me of Siouxsie & The Banshees. The typical sterile and cold timbre of voice of vocalist Anna Di Stefano for sure is a very essential element to understand the comparison. She sings a similar vein as Siouxsie Sioux, but the sound globally speaking also moves on colder paths. “Pressing Desire”, “Waving In The Dark” and “Shining” are essential songs on this album. It’s a pity this band didn’t go on as the 7 tracks featured on “A Mysterious Design” simply are great pieces of the 80s legacy.

Conclusion: Style Sindrome could have been a noticeable band from the 80s, but the short career of the band left them rather anonymous to the wider audience. Infrastition is a bit like rehabilitating the band by this excellent re-edition.

Best songs: “Pressing Desire”, “Waving In The Dark”, “Shining”, “Thinking About”.

Rate: (DP:8)DP.
