Genre/Influences: Electronic, Cold-Wave.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Spreader is a Portuguese duo driven by Pedro Hébil and Tiago Lopes. “351” is the band’s debut album featuring eleven songs.

Content: This work smells like good-old memories from the 80s. The songs indeed are driven by electronics and guitar connected to Cold-Wave. Some parts are carried by solid kicks getting it all danceable and even transcendental while the guitar playing is sometimes becoming very hypnotic as well. .

+ + + : Interesting debut by this duo which is clearly inspired by good-old 80s productions which is an aspect of their work you might notice in the production of the vocals but also the guitar play. I like the fuzzy, hypnotic, guitar play but also some passages for their uplifting sensation and even an EBM touch on top of “Formas Dos Céus”.

– – – : The mixing and global production is missing a professional touch but at the other side it also creates -or empowers, the 80s feeling.

Conclusion: Interesting debut album which might serve as a solid basis to move on with.

Best songs: “Formas Dos Céus”, “PIM”, “Liberdade”.

Rate: 7.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
