Blutengel mastermind Chris Pohl returns with his side project, She Hates Emotions. This marks the third album he has released under this project, clearly showing his dedication and enjoyment of this creative outlet. While the album’s title suggests an uncertain future, Pohl masterfully evokes memories of the past. She Hates Emotions is a heartfelt tribute to ’80s Wave-Pop, once again reviving the magic of that iconic era. At times, it feels like you’re hearing fresh tracks from Erasure or Camouflage, yet Pohl’s deeper vocal timbre unmistakably defines this as She Hates Emotions. The project exists within a nostalgic time capsule, using elements like sweeping effects, drum patterns, and vintage-inspired melodies to transport listeners back to the golden age of the ’80s. The album also features a guest appearance by Marc Massive of Massive Ego on one track, reflecting their well-established camaraderie. However, one potential drawback is that, despite Pohl’s significant improvement as a vocalist over the years, his voice may not be the ideal fit for highly pop-oriented Synth-Pop. That said, the album remains a pleasant and enjoyable listen, even if it doesn’t rank as my personal favorite from She Hates Emotions. (Rating:7½).

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
