Nairod Yarg – Nairod Yarg (CD Album – Nairod Yarg)
Genre/Influences: Cold-wave, post-punk, dark-rock.
Background/Info: Nairod Yarg is a new French formation, which clearly appears to work in the purest DIY style. They this year released their self-released debut work revealing eleven songs.
Content: The main influences from the band clearly have to be found in the darkest hours of the 80s. Some guitar parts remind me of the drama and power of Bauhaus, but Nairod Yarg also reveals a post-punk touch plus a more common dark-rock orientation. They move in between melancholic tracks and powerful songs. Most of the lyrics are in English, but I also notice a few songs sung in French.
+ + + : The cover of the album has something pretty intriguing because of the yellow eyes of the figures. It fits with the music, which reflects certain darkness getting us back to the 80s. I especially like the song “Les Mots Brulants”, which evokes the spirit of Bauhaus. Another interesting cut is the punkish-minded “Effortless”.
– – – : The rock influence is not exactly what I would call the most successful element of the work. That’s maybe an element to throw away (I think of a song like “A Shadow Runs Away”).
Conclusion: Considering this album is a debut, I think Nairod Yarg has an interesting potential especially in their 80s inspiration.
Best songs: “Les Mots Brulants”, “Effortless”, “The Garden”, “Angry Radio”.
