Genre/Influences: Indie-pop, pop-rock.

Background/Info: Myselfson is a French duo based in Paris and which is now active since 2009. “Memory Park” is the band’s debut album.

Content: Myselfson claims to be inspired by bands such as Depeche Mode and NIN. I can’t really hear those bands in their music, but the mix of influences, ranging from pop to rock, are quite noticeable elements. Electronics and guitar are pretty complementary creating this open-minded sonic canvas. I also noticed some more ballad-minded passages with mainly piano sounds.

+ + + : The diversity of the songs makes it interesting as you for sure will find tracks that will catch your attention. I like the songs with explicit electronic sound treatments such as “Every Night Is A Fight” and the well-crafted         and more sophisticated “At The Far Side Of The World”. I think this band has more potential moving on an explicit electro-way. I also want to catch your attention this band is working in a pure DIY style resulting in an honest work.

– – – : Even if Myselfson is already active for several years I still have the impression they’re a bit in search of a real sound identity.

Conclusion: There are some real good ideas running through this work, but ideas aren’t enough to speak about a fully successful album. However I feel this band can do better and this work can be a basis to move on with.

Best songs: “Every Night Is A Fight”, “At The Far Side Of The World”, “Wake Up”.

Rate: (7).

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
