Genre/Influences: IDM, industrial, experimental, techno.

Background/Info: William J. Youngman is already active for numerous years in the most sophisticated and visionary fields of electronics. Most of his work got released under the ‘Youngman’ moniker, but the past few years he started to release work as Headless Horseman. This new EP (also available as vinyl format) also is the first solo-release on the 47 label (run by Tommy Four Seven).

Content: “47009” invites the listener to join in for a minimal electronic journey of 4 tracks. You’ll be welcomed by a hard kick, which is rapidly assisted by heavy, industrial blasts and technoid elements. The composition is sophisticated and definitely into a dark IDM-format, which sometimes reminds me of Kangding Ray and Diamond Version.

+ + + : This is the kind of music I fully enjoyed. The composition is the fruitful result from a creative sound process avoiding established standards and cheap techno tricks. There’s a judicious merge between different influences, which might appeal for lovers of intelligent techno music at one side and visionary industrial freaks at the other side. Headless Horseman is the amount of it all. The result is a fascinating and rough production.

– – – : The experimental and/or minimal touch of the production is maybe not accessible for a wider audience, but it becomes rapidly clear that this is the kind of work meant to please fine tasters! So you’d better avoid this kind of production if you’re in search of average techno music or pure industrial work.

Conclusion: Headless Horseman is the kind of project opening new paths for further generations of electronic musicians. This sound construction has been made by a true sound architect.

Best songs: “Bleeding Arrows”, “Widow’s Peak”, “Shattered”.

Rate: (8½).

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
