Genre/Influences: Shoegaze, cold-wave, post-punk, gothic.

Background/Info: Set up in 2012 FTR is a trio from Paris (France) consisting of Yann Canevet (bass, vocals),
Pauline CP (keyboards, programming) and Brice Delourmel (guitar, programming). They’ve already released several EP’s and the debut full length “Horizons” in 2015. “Manners” is their second album released on vinyl format by Third Coming Records (France) and on CD by Metropolis (USA).

Content: I never heard of FTR before and it was a kind of revelation discovering this extremely dark piece of music mixing elements of shoegaze (for the fuzzy guitar), cold-wave (for the dark sphere) and electronics. They make me think to an imaginary hybrid of Jesus And The Mary Chain and Suicide. The drum sections are pretty bombastic while the misty vocals are totally matching with the music.

+ + + : I can’t say this band has reinvented the shoegaze- or cold-wave music, but they’ve something apart from the rest. The extremely dark and somewhat disturbing atmosphere hangs over the entire album. It has something fuzzy, which is typical for shoegaze while the electronic treatments inject a personal touch to the work. But “Manners” first of all is a brilliant album featuring a succession of great songs. “Black Sands” and “Love Bots” both are the absolute attention grabbers, but there’s something to say about every single cut. There’s a great progression in nearly all songs sometimes accentuated by electronic treatments. “One” is a pretty cool song illustrating the symbiosis between guitar and electronics.

– – – : The songs are somewhat similar, but there’s no reason to complain.

Conclusion: FTR sounds as modern shoegaze and the least I can say is that this music genre still rocks! “Manners” is an absolute must have album!

Best songs: “Black Sand”, “Love Bots”, “One”, “Sunrise”, “Never”, “Cross Your Heart”.

Inferno Sound Diaries
I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
