Shifted – Six Steps To Resurgence (Vinyl 12” – Avian)

Background/Info: Guy Brewer aka Shifted has been quite prolific this year. Next to a new full length album he also released a few EP’s like this “Six Steps To Resurgence”, which have been released on his own label Avian.
Content: This EP is more driven by techno influences compared to the album “Appropriation Stories”. It however remains a rather dark sound creation filled with some misty noises while driven by dance loops. You rapidly notice the fascination of the artist to experiment with sounds. This is the right stuff for underground techno clubs.
+ + + : The mix between typical techno elements and more raw darker noise treatments are a sound formula that becomes more and more familiar and especially for the Berliner scene. The main strength of this kind of composition is not only in the sound production properly speaking, but especially in the search and creation of sounds. That’s precisely what I like in the work of this artist.
– – – : I’m missing the minimalism from the album of Shifted. This EP has been clearly –and logically, more composed for DJ’s and dancefloors. It’s not bad at all, but it has not the same effect of surprise if you’re more into IDM instead of techno.
Conclusion: Shifted remains first of all a techno-driven sound project and that’s what has been carefully illustrated on this EP. It however remains techno music for an experienced audience.
