Genre/Influences: Techno, experimental-techno.

Background/Info: Diarmaid O’Meara is an Irish producer and label owner (Gobsmacked Records) based in Berlin. He released an impressive number of EP’s and two full length albums (cf. “Structured Noise” and “Anti-Social Behaviour”) in 2008. This is the 3rd album of the artist, which is available in different formats. The USB features extra music and clips.

Content: The work starts off with a phenomenal and monstrous sound, which like a Tibetan horn will make the windows tremble. It progressively evolved till a dance kick joins in. Diarmaid O’Meara invites his audience to embark for a fascinating techno trip accomplished with dark and somewhat ghost-like atmospheres, experimental noise treatments, great filtered sound treatments, but also groovy sequences and some minimal passages. The work is diverse, but always carried by danceable techno vibes.

The USB stick features extra music, which is more into ‘traditional’ techno music. These tracks are more appropriated for the dancefloors. You’ll also discover remixes and video clips. The clip of “Battlecry” (debut song of the regular album) is an interesting one for showing German girls exposed for the very first time in 1988 to techno music.

+ + + : The ‘regular’ album is a varied and well-crafted techno opus revealing dark elements and great sound treatments. The work is characterized by the impressive production skills of the artist. Even if you’re not into techno music you’re going to like some impressive sound treatments and especially the resonating ‘Tibetan horns’ right in the beginning. Diarmaid O’Meara is an artist who doesn’t repeat himself, but likes to explore different ideas.

– – – : I was not as convinced by the extra music on the USB, which is less creative and diverse although perfectly suited to set dancefloors on fire.

Conclusion: Diarmaid O’Meara is one of those techno producers who reveals a different and definitely more intelligent approach in music. “In Your Head” is a fully enjoyable composition.

Best songs: “Wesley Snipes”, “Battlecry”, “In Your Head”, “Headbanger”, “If Only You Knew”.

Rate: (7½).

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
