Genre/Influences: Techno, experimental-techno, techno-ambient.

Background/Info: Michal Wolski is a man of many talents and involvements. He has been active as musician, producer, journalist, DJ and radio host. Hailing from Poland Michal Wolski has already released numerous releases, “The Root” being the newest album released at the end of 2015. It looks like an EP as it features 4 tracks plus 2 remixes.

Content: The opening cut leads the listener into a world of experiment with noises, but quite progressively the albums moves into a very personal technoid odyssey revealing minimal sound treatments, haunting atmospheres and a kind of space-technoid dimension.

The world of Michal Wolski is also accomplished with a true spirit for sound creation. It injects this experimental taste to the work, which is achieved with a few brilliant passages moving from crystalline sound effects to subtle minimal treatments.

Both remixes have been made by 2 other Polish artists and I especially recommend the great remix by Gary Holldman.

+ + + : Techno music no longer made of cheap and trendy tricks and formulas. There’s a new and avant-garde minded generation mixing techno with darker and experimental influences. I like the underground approach running through this work.

– – – : The experimental side of the work is not the most accessible.

Conclusion: “The Root” is a passionate opus, which might catch the attention of people principally rejecting techno music. This is techno music from another galaxy and meant to make aliens dance!

Best songs: “The Root”, “The Root – Gary Holldman Remix”.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
