Genre/Influences: Cold-Wave, EBM.

Format: Digital, CD, Cassette.

Background/Info: Alexander Donat strikes back with the second full length of his newest project Assassun. I got the opportunity to listen and review most of his productions he released under the Vlimmer moniker. Assassun is more Electro driven while the album has been inspired by people in Alexander’s daily life -himself included.

Content: The songs are short and explosive, raw and powerful featuring passionate English vocals. The tracks are carried by fat bass lines and supported with dark, electronic, atmospheres. Some passages remind me a bit of Portion Control. The work ends with a pretty minimal and somewhat Experimental cut.

+ + + : I like this project which without innovating deals with a very personal sound. There’s a late 80s touch running through the work and which is accentuated by the rough and unpolished sound production. On top of it all you’ll hear passionate vocals.

– – – : I noticed a very few unaccomplished cuts which sound a bit like early demo versions.

Conclusion: Assassun sounds pure underground and retro-like but is definitely a project I would recommend to 80s nostalgic fans.

Best songs: “Torpescence”, “Amniotic Concrete”, “At Gunpoint”, “Sun Gloating”, “Excavate”.

Rate: 8.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
