Hatchling – Other (CD EP – Hatchling)
Genre/Influences: Synth-pop, indie-pop.
Content: Hatchling is a brand-new Belgian electro project. Simon Mahieu is the main inspiration behind this band, which also features a female vocalist.
The voice of Fien Descheemaeker sounds fragile and a bit childish. Mahieu sings on most of the songs as well, mainly in duo. Musically, Hatchling composes a very noticeable synth-pop music based upon alluring vintage synthesizer sounds reminding me of Gary Numan. The work is achieved by refined piano arrangements. Most of the songs are quite dreamy while the retro synth sounds evoke some real good 80s souvenirs.
The EP features 5 songs and the final track is for sure the most surprising one. This song sounds different compared to the others. Hatchling here explores a more cinematographic style, which is pretty experimental.
Conclusion: “Other” is a quite successful debut although I’m missing a few more catchy elements to speak about an outstanding debut! Hatchling definitely is a band to keep an eye on!
Best songs: “Names”, “Prfct”.
Rate: (DP:7)DP.

Since you’re here …
… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.
Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.
If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
