Genre/Influences: Electro/Techno-Pop.

Format: Digital.

Background/Info: Paco Butrón is a Spanish producer/musician and remixer active under the Cyborgdrive moniker. He previously released a few productions and strikes back with the album “Northern Echoes” featuring ten songs.

Content: This artist composes instrumental cuts, sometimes joined by a few robotic vocal effects. The composition is clearly driven by dance vibes, mixing elements of Electro-Pop, Techno and even pure Dance music. The first part of the work reveals multiple space-like sounds and atmospheres while the album progressively evolves into a very Dance-driven and more ‘commercial’ apotheosis.

+ + + : Technically this album reveals a great sound production. The debut part of the work is great and features many attention grabbers. Cyborgdrive here found a perfect balance between the different influences he’s dealing with; a fusion between underground- and more commercial/dance music. “Straitjacket” is a song to watch out for! I like the somewhat space-like vocal effects running through the song. It’s a bit similar to “Darklands”, which is another cut to watch out for.

– – – : The album takes off with several great pieces of music, but quite progressively the artist moves towards more commercial Dance pieces. There’s nothing wrong with that, but these songs sound more ‘cliché’ and a bit cheap.

Conclusion: Cyborgdrive is mixing extremes; from alluring, danceable underground Electro/Techno-Pop to commercial Dance-music.

Best songs: “Straitjacket”, “Darklands”.

Rate: (6½).

Inferno Sound Diaries
I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
