Escape From Warsaw – Korozja (Album – Zoharum)
Genre/Influences: Minimal-Electro, Experimental, Industrial, Techno, EBM.
Format: Digital, CD.
Background/Info: Karol Suka is a Polish artist who was previously involved with different projects. Escape From Warsaw was set up in 2013. This is the first full length album by the artist. The work also features songs from a previous project (cf. Street City Nomads) Suka has been involved with.
Content: Entering the universe of Escape From Warsaw feels like getting lost in a true sonic labyrinth. This artist is mixing music genres, creating a kind of imaginary sound laboratory. From Minimal-Electro supported by industrial elements to pure EBM to Techno-Experiments to total Experimental stuff, this work brings numerous genres together. The last tracks are however more into a total Experimental style, like a kind of ‘free-style’. The vocals are sung in Polish, but you’ll also notice a few English words on one of the EBM-driven cuts.
+ + + : Karol Suka makes no compromises and doesn’t take care of fashion trends. He gives the feeling of composing the music he likes whatever the style might be. It’s a free-styled production where Industrial- and Experimental music might be seen as the most prominent influences. I however prefer both EBM-inspired cuts “Male Psy” and “Open your Heart”. Both tracks also reveal the complexity of the writing. It’s a high-tech and intelligent production characterized by both EBM songs. But don’t expect to discover ‘classical’ EBM, the artist appearing to be ultra open-minded. The digipak format created by the artist himself looks cool and unique… just like the music.
– – – : The album creates an effect of mishmash and is not always the most accessible composition. I especially regret the more into Experimental last part of the work, which is less fascinating.
Conclusion: Escape From Warsaw appears to be an artist defying the borders of established genres, preferring to create music out of the box.
Best songs: “Open Your Heart”, “Male Psy”, “Przemijanie”, “Korozja”.
