Genre/Influences: Experimental, Minimal-Electro, IDM.

Format: Digital, Cassette.

Background/Info: Bruit Fantôme is a French producer who has already been active for a couple of years now. “Robert Smith”refers to the legendary frontman of The Cure and features seven titles from the band that serves as inspiration to this work. The EP is part of the label’s series “Digital Mutant Series”, which is meant to be an exploration of the alternative French Techno scene and its subgenres.

Content: The EP features 7 songs; 6 of them are titles from The Cure. But this EP is not a cover work, but simply a personal interpretation of Bruit Fantôme from these titles. The sound is pretty minimal-like, somewhere in between pure Experimental music and more danceable parts. Bleeping sequences, pitched vocals and low bass lines are resonating.

+ + + : The idea/concept of the work is original and has nothing in common with the original songs from The Cure. “Forest (Monsters Are Coming)” is one of the highlights for its refined bleeping sequences. The song is rather repetitive, but progressively moving crescendo. I also like this work for its pure minimal approach. It has something complex and yet pretty accessible.

– – – : I’m not a huge fan of “Carnage Visors”, which is driven by heavier d’n’b influences.

Conclusion: This EP doesn’t sound blasphemous for all fans of Robert Smith and The Cure while it will ravish Electro heads in search of originality.

Best songs: “Forest (Monsters Are Coming)”, “Disintegration”, “Subway Song”.

Rate: (7½).

Inferno Sound Diaries
I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
