Background/Info: Cryo Chamber owner Simon Heath moves back in the steps of his Atrium Carceri music project. The title of the album indicates what it’s all about; Atrium Carceri has composed a soundtrack for the Mortal Shell game. This new opus features fifteen tracks.
Content: Atrium Carceri can look back at a serious discography, but this composition for sure is a special one. The Soundtrack style is omnipresent in the short duration tracks, but also in the reinforced orchestral arrangements and epic chants. Deep vibrating voices –often reminding me of the effect of throat singers, empowers the dark and mysterious sphere hanging over this work. The percussion parts are also essential to the accomplishment of this work and often boosting the orchestral style.
+ + + : Even if you quickly recognize the Soundtrack format and style of the work, this album can stand on its own. It reminds me of early Atrium Carceri stuff, which was characterized by obscurity. The epic voices have been meticulously positioned at the right place. The global production has something impressive and high-tech. This work symbolizes the maturity of an artist, “Mortal Shell” being for sure a kind of consecration for the global oeuvre of Simon Heath. It remains a dream for artists to compose a soundtrack once in a lifetime, but it’s not that easy to write a masterpiece when you’re not familiar with this work. Atrium Carceri accomplished a true tour de force.
– – – : It’s a pity a few tracks are not extended, but that’s due to the Soundtrack concept consisting of short songs.
Conclusion: Atrium Carceri never disappointed me, and this work is for sure one belonging to the referential works of the project!
