Genre/Influences:   Electro-wave.

Format: Digital, Cassette.

Background/Info: Tristán B is a Mexican solo-project driven by ‘Antonio R.’ The music is driven by good-old synth influences from the 80s. “Porcelain” was already released several months ago now (2019) and features six songs. The cassette edit of the work has been strictly limited to 50 copies.

Content: The songs on “Porcelain” indeed smell like the good-old synth-pop music from the 80s. I don’t want to compare the project with famous artists, but some melody lines remind me a bit of Tears For Fears. The melodic touch is quite present all the work long, but especially the last cut (cf. “Don’t Let Me Go”) is worthy of examination for its typical analogue resonation. The vocals have been sung in English and are rather soft and clear.

+ + + : I like the reverie and melody emerging from this work. The low bass lines are constantly evoking the 80s sound formula. But the approach of Tristán B goes a step further than only inspired by 80s synth-music. There also is a more personal and contemporary touch on top.

– – – : The songs are cool and easy listening, but the tracklist is missing a truly potential hit.

Conclusion:  Tristán B is an interesting discovery from the Other Voices Records roster. If you’re into melodic 80s electro-pop with a dark touch on top, this record will catch your attention.

Best songs: “Don’t Let Me Go”, “City Rain”.

Rate: (6½).

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
