Genre/Influences: Experimental, abstract, cinematographic.

Format: Digital, CDR.

Background/Info: “Banat Banat Ban Jai” is the debut album of Italian composer (and multi-instrumentalist) Andrea Laudante. His album is meant as a kind of ‘diary through sound and listening, as a form of meditation’.

Content: This work makes me think of a sound collage made by multiple sounds and noises. Acoustic instruments and sound manipulations both create an abstract sonic puzzle. Piano play brings a kind of recognizable element to the experiment. I also notice one cut (featuring Francesco Di Cristofaro) featuring the magic sound of a duduk and bansuri creating a kind of ritual sphere.

+ + + : The aforementioned cut (cf. “From Benares To Yeravan”) featuring duduk and bansuri played by Francesco Di Cristofaro has something different from the rest of the tracklist. It sounds more mysterious and I like this enigmatic atmosphere. Another attention grabber is the somewhat early industrial-reminding “Maeshwara”. Piano is an essential aspect of this album, which sometimes inject a melancholic touch, but also an artistic input.

– – – : This is the kind of album that will catch the attention of a restricted number of listeners. It’s a very experimental work, which is hardly accessible.

Conclusion: This work is meant as a kind of meditation, which I can imagine will work for some people, but not for wider masses.

Best songs: “From Benares To Yeravan”, “Maeshwara”.

Rate: (6).

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
