The Gathering – Love Songs (CD EP – Cold Transmission Music)
Genre/Influences: Gothic, goth-rock, dark-rock.
Background/Info: Canadian formation The Gathering was originally set up in the 80s and reactivated a few years ago now. “Love Songs” is their newest EP featuring five songs.
Content: The sound and influences of the band haven’t really changed throughout the years. The music is driven by a mix of dark-rock, post-punk and 80s cold-wave music. The guitar playing injects the spirit into the music while the electronic arrangements added some melodic touch. The title song definitely sounds as a potential hit while the other cuts left are worthy of examination as well.
+ + + : “Love Songs” is a real strong song, which is carried by a great chorus (which is easy to sing along). The guitar playing brings power and darkness to the work. But Gary Economy is not only a great guitarist, but also a great singer. The title song is also featured as an “Extended”-version. Some of the other cuts left are very efficient and I especially want to mention “1000 Years”, which reminds me a bit of The Stooges.
– – – : The only single song that couldn’t totally convince me is “Building A Bridge (Gloria)”.
Conclusion: This is a brilliant EP and for sure the perfect way to bring this band back on the map.
Best songs: “Love Songs”, “Love Songs – Extended”, “1000 Years”.
