Genre/Influences: Electro-pop, experimental-pop.

Background/Info: One year after their last album (cf. “Hologram Moon”) the Italian duo Kirlian Camera already has a new full length (cf. “Pills”) in the pipeline. “Hellfire” is a sonic bridge between both albums featuring new songs plus a few remixes. Notice by the way “Hellfire” is also available as vinyl edit.

Content: Kirlian Camera is fascinated by science fiction, which might explain the choice of the title song, which is a cover version of a song from the “Lucifer” TV-series. It sounds as electro-pop made with industrial sound treatments. It has something experimental-like, which is an aspect that also comes back at a few other new songs. Another new song entitled “V2K” sounds as the most danceable cut from the EP confirming the ‘dance’ skills of Angelo Bergamini and Elena Alice Fossi.

There also is a remix from their compatriots of Blank, which takes us back to the previous album and the song “Polar-IHS”.

+ + + : Kirlian Camera is a formation that has progressively evolved over the years, experimenting with different influences, but always had a nose to compose alluring (hit)songs. This new EP –which rather appears to be a mini-album, confirms this approach and the band’s move towards electro-pop driven music. The title song is an original cover song, but I personally prefer the dance vibes emerging from “V2K”. This work stands for diversity, alternating catchy passages and experimentalism. Kirlian Camera also remains characterized by the sensual voice of Elena Alice Fossi. Blank also did a great job remixing “Polar-IHS”.

– – – : The title song is an original idea, but not exactly my favorite song from the EP.

Conclusion: While fans are probably still under the influence of their last year released full length, Kirlian Camera seems to have already announced a great new work. There’s no better teaser than “Hellfire”.

Best songs: “V2K”, “Metaluna – Milano Mix”, “Polar-HIS – Rmx by Blank”, “Hellfire”.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
