Genre/Influences: Electro-pop.

Background/Info: Black Line, the project driven by Cyrusrex and Douglas J. McCarthy (Nitzer Ebb) plus the addition of several guests who are coming in and going out, have released this EP (also available as 7” featuring only two songs). “Sedition” was the opening song from the debut album “Treason, Sedition, And Subversive Activities” released in 2017.

Content: The title song brings us back to the album, which was a diversified opus mixing multiple genres. “Sedition” is a rather ‘calm’ song, which has something romantic-pop like and driven by the unique vocals of Douglas Mc.Carthy.

We next get a so-called “Sedated Remix”, which is more film-like. Next comes a minimal remix by Daniel Myer. Last, but not least, there also is a remix of the song “Go” (which didn’t appear at the album) by Ken Marshall (Scaremeister).

+ + + : I’m not a huge fan of this title song, but Douglas Mc.Carthy’s unique timbre of voice makes the magic of the track. The best part of the EP comes right at the end. The minimal-like remix by Daniel Myer has something intriguing and definitely minimal-like. The remix of “Go” by Ken Marshall has a strong club-appeal and is the unique high light from “Sedation”.

– – – : Speaking for myself there were much better songs featured at the band’s album instead of “Sedition”.

Conclusion: If you never heard of Black Line before, just discover the album first!

Best songs: “Go – Ken ‘Hiwatt’ Marshall Remix”, “Sedition – Daniel Myer Remix”.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
