Genre/Influences: Experimental, abstract.

Background/Info: Mexican artist Israel Martinez is what we might call a sound artist. He has released numerous productions over the past ten years. “Pausa” is a selection of 6 tracks that were composed during the past six years.

Content: The sound universe of this artist is clearly based upon experimentation. He used field recordings and clearly enjoys manipulating sounds and noises. It sometimes results in short ambient passages built up with industrial sounds, but it mainly remains an abstract sonic collage.

+ + + : “Pausa” is the kind of work you have to discover while assisted by a visual performance. And that’s precisely the purpose of the author. This way his creation becomes complementary with another artistic form, finally resulting in a wider artistic dimension. This is an album that will appeal for lovers of truly minimal experimental music.

– – – : Some productions don’t have the same impact without a visual source and that’s what I’m missing when listening to “Pausa”.

Conclusion: “Pausa” is a sonic puzzle made with noises and improvised sound treatments. It’s an extreme experience in sound!

Best songs: “Delava”, “Exorcizios Meditatio Sonus II”.

Rate: (6).

Inferno Sound Diaries
I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
