Genre/Influences: Experimental.

Background/Info: Antoine Panaché is a nickname for Lilia Scheerder. Hailing from The Netherlands he already released a few productions in his homeland on Barreuh Records. “Pleasures” features 2 songs, which are cover versions.

Content: We first get a cover version from Alphaville’s “Forever Young” and next from Echo & The Bunnymen’s “Nocturnal Me”. Cover versions is a quite common procedure, but Antoine Panaché’s approach is completely different. You indeed recognize the songs through the lyrics while the composition is totally different from the original versions. Ghost-like voices and atmospheres plus a great arsenal of noises and experimental treatments create a truly abstract format.

+ + + : Antoine Panaché is transforming both great 80s songs into something totally different. It’s hard to recognize the original versions, and that must have been for sure the goal. The songs seem to have been a basis to experiment and create some weird, but fascinating ‘new’ edits. It’s definitely an original release.

– – – : I was less convinced by the cover of “Nocturnal Me”, which sounds less inspired.

Conclusion: No doubt about it, these cover versions will not become ‘hits’ like it happened for the original edits, but it’s a creative experimental process.

Best songs: “Forever Young”.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
