Genre/Influences: Dark-Wave, Dream-Pop, Shoegaze.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Based in Roma (Italy) 3+Dead saw the daylight in 2017. Set up by Elisa Pambianchi (vocals), Roberto Ruggeri (guitar, synths) and Giuseppe Marino (bass) they released their self-titled debut album by the end of last year.

Content: “3+Dead” is an album getting us back in time, somewhere in the magic and dark 80s decade. The Shoegaze style mixed with an explicit Dream-Pop influence has something reminding me of the magic of The Cocteau Twins. The guitar playing is an essential element of the album, but especially the spirit of the songs. Elisa Pambianchi sings in a fragile and sometimes emotional way. One of the most surprising songs is the cover version of DAF “Kebabtraume”, which has been transposed into the band’s approach.

+ + + : 3+Dead doesn’t take the work by surprise; the originality is hard to find, but the way this band has achieved their debut album is absolutely remarkable. They found a perfect balance between all the influences with masterfully guitar injecting a true spirit and emotion into the songs. That has been accentuated by the fragility of the singer’s timbre of voice. It resulted in several dreamy, dark Dream-Pop songs, but still in a few harder pieces like the “The Thing That You Call Love”, which is for sure my favorite one. But I also have to mention their very personal adaptation of “Kebabtraume”. You for sure recognize the lyrics of the song, but the music has been reworked into pure Shoegaze & Dream-Pop.

– – – : The debut part of the album features a few songs, which are a little less hesitant, but quite progressively the work evolves towards its best part.

Conclusion: Even if this album was already released a while ago, it’s a successful debut from a band I can only, but recommend.

Best songs: “The Thing That You Call Love”, “Kebabtraume”, “Snake Of June”, “Shine”.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
