Music and cinema have always gone hand in hand. And nothing quite beats the drama of a well-thought-out piece of music in a tense movie scene. When thinking of music in film, names like John Williams, Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman probably come to mind. However, there are some great electronic scores out there that can rival any traditional theatrical compilation.

Here are just three movies that use electronic music to enhance the audience’s enjoyment of both storylines and scenes.

Ocean’s Eleven

This thrilling movie sees Danny Ocean, played by George Clooney, plan an elaborate casino trip after finding a new sense of freedom. So, naturally, many of its scenes take place in and around casinos. The choice of music used by the director includes funk and jazz. But the most thrilling choice of composition used is the upbeat electronic sounds of David Holmes, immersing viewers into the clubhouse setting. This is something that works perfectly among the bright lights and night-time atmosphere.

With such an exciting mise-en-scène and soundtrack, the film is like an invitation to the casino. However, you don’t need to go all the way to Vegas or Monte Carlo to feel the atmosphere of such places. Thanks to the versatile Ocean’s Eleven soundtrack and websites like Bonusfinder CA, people can enjoy poker and roulette online to the beats of David Holmes. All you need now is to practice your poker face and sharpen up your witty movie-style one-liners.

Blade Runner

Arguably one of the most iconic movies ever made, the original 80s cyberpunk spectacular features Harrison Ford at his best. The premise of the film sees our leading man looking to find and terminate four rogue ‘replicants’ (bioengineered beings with superhuman abilities). And such a space-age concept requires a futuristic soundtrack, which is where movie composer Vangelis steps in.

His sounds perfectly encapsulate the movie, from the moody synthesisers to the echoing vocal tracks that feel like they are surrounding you. Luckily, you can find the names of individual Blade Runner tracks on sites like Discogs.com and lose yourself in the immersive Vangelis soundscapes.

The Social Network

Who would have thought that a film about Facebook would have such an alluring electronic soundtrack? However, when you discover that the legendary Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross wrote it then you can’t wait to watch it for the music component alone. Telling the story of Mark Zuckerberg and his creation of one of the world’s most successful social media sites, The Social Network is a gritty blockbuster.

The music stands out in this picture as it helps set the scenes and build up tension in all the right places. It shows how electronic music can truly appeal to an audience’s emotions. And when some of the masters of darker-sounding music are composing it, then it’s the perfect music and film combination. This innovative duo has worked on other soundtracks together, as Newyorker.com shows. So, you can easily find further collaborations of theirs that bring more stunning electronic soundtracks.

Electronic music certainly makes an unforgettable score. Whether it’s part of a mix of sounds in Ocean’s Eleven or a prominent feature in movies like Blade Runner and The Social Network, it has the power to carry a scene whilst adding atmosphere and tension.
